18 Plus Program
The 18 Plus program is specially designed for students who have received their Certificate of Completion for High School, but remain eligible for additional high school services. Students must have completed a combination of pre-requisite courses in Occupational Preparation 1 and 2, Community-Based Occupational Preparation, Vocational Preparation and Experience, or similar courses from another district. Sufficient pre-requisite entrance requirements will be determined through the ARD committee and Director of Special Services.
This course offers students the opportunity to develop transitional and/or employable skills through practice and participation of general and specific career skills. This course studies occupational preparation and employment issues including career surveys, employment qualifications and responsibilities, the application process, resume development, soft skills, employer expectations, and other employment/workforce related skills. Skills associated with activities of daily living such as grooming, social skills, behavior, menu planning, recreation and leisure, community involvement, etc. will be integrated into the daily experiences of the student.
This course is designed to allow participants to experience real work conditions, yet allow them to return to the campus, as needed, for additional training, development, and clarification of job specific and personal skills. Acquisition of the prerequisite skills will determine a participant’s readiness for off campus and/or community based activities. The CBI component of the 18 Plus program is designed in connection with community businesses and District related entities, and established through contractual agreements with the District, regarding job sampling opportunities.
Occupational Preparation
The Occupational Preparation courses prepare students to enter the job market through a study of employment issues including recognizing what skills define particular jobs, the application and interview processes, identifying attributes that enhance employability, ways to locate available jobs, using community services/resources to aid employments, and maintaining a successful job experience. Issues that are introduced to students include safety, understanding job responsibilities, time requirements, and management, relationships, task commitment, accepting and acceptance of job requirements. Students explore a variety of jobs and the activities that comprise responsibilities and routines of employments. As the students moves through the levels of instruction, skills build and expand to promote transition to independent living and post-school employment.
